Navigation in a “Virtual” Maze: Sex Differences and Correlation With Psychometric Measures of Spatial Ability in Humans

چکیده
This study used computer-generated (“virtual”) mazes to investigate sex differences in the efficiency of spatial route learning in humans. Correlations between maze performance and traditional psychometric measures of spatial ability also were examined. Male and female subjects completed a total of five learning trials on each of two spatial mazes and completed a battery of spatial and verbal cognitive tests. As well as demonstrating the typical male advantage on psychometric measures of spatial performance, robust sex differences favoring males were found for both the time required to solve the mazes ( d 5 1.59) and the number of spatial memory errors committed ( d 5 1.40). Highly significant positive correlations were obtained between scores on the paper and pencil tests and performance on the maze task. The results of the present study are consistent with results from studies in other mammalian species suggesting a male advantage for spatial navigation through a novel environment. © 1998 Elsevier Science Inc.

Investigating the Effect of Music on Spatial Learning in a Virtual Reality Task
Background: Spatial learning and navigation is a fundamental cognitive ability consisting of multiple cognitive components. Despite intensive efforts conducted with the assistance of virtual reality technology and functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) modality, the music effect on this cognition and the involved neuronal mechanisms remain elusive. Objectives: We aimed to investigate the...

The study of navigational ability in humans is often limited by the restricted availability and inconvenience of using large novel environments. In the present study we use a computer-generated virtual environment to study sex differences in human spatial navigation. Adult male and female participants navigated through a virtual water maze where both landmarks and room geometry were available a...

The Morris water maze is a spatial abilities test adapted from the animal spatial cognition literature and has been studied in the context of sex differences in humans. This is because its standard design, which manipulates proximal (close) and distal (far) cues, applies to human navigation. However, virtual Morris water mazes test navigation skills on a scale that is vastly smaller than natura...
متن کاملSex differences in human virtual water maze performance: novel measures reveal the relative contribution of directional responding and spatial knowledge.
Sex differences in humans on virtual water maze navigation are well established when overall performance is measured, e.g., by the total time taken to find the hidden platform, total path length, or quadrant dwell time during probe trials. Currently, it is unknown whether males are better spatial learners than females, or if overall performance differences reflect other aspects of the task unre...

Males typically outperform females on spatial tasks, beginning early in life and continuing into adulthood. This study aimed to characterize age and sex differences in human spatial ability using a virtual Water Maze Task (vWMT), which is based on the classic Morris water maze spatial navigation task used in rodents. Performance on the vWMT and on a task assessing visuospatial perception, Menta...
